Large trucks and other heavy vehicles are vital supply chain components, helping keep businesses up and running. Yet as drivers rush to fulfill tight deadlines, their safety becomes compromised. Protect your team with these 10 heavy vehicle training courses to enhance operational efficiency and maintain compliance.
As an integral part of the supply chain, the transport industry is the lifeline of the global economy. From construction to retail and healthcare, businesses rely on commercial trucks to replenish their supply of goods and services. As such, drivers are under constant pressure to meet the demands of their suppliers and customers on time.
Unfortunately, this leads to major road accidents. In 2022, over 5,837 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes, according to the National Safety Council. Avoid contributing to this rising statistic by prioritizing workplace safety through heavy vehicle training.
What is heavy vehicle training?
Heavy vehicle training goes beyond basic driving skills. It educates your workers to take extra care when transporting goods on the road by practicing defensive driving. Proper training also equips them with specialized knowledge and skills to practice fuel-efficient driving and handle unexpected situations.
Investing in your crew’s truck training is critical for your business’s compliance with federal laws. Regulations like safety protocols, rest periods, and weight limits must be strictly enforced to avoid penalties from your local government.
Operators who have obtained their commercial driver's license (CDL) are mandated to undergo heavy vehicle training. This certifies they are competent enough to transport goods from long distances and aware of the emergency response procedures in case road accidents occur.
What are considered heavy vehicles?
Under this category, heavy vehicles in the U.S. have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of over 26,000 pounds. Examples include:
Delivery truck: The most common truck used by businesses, delivery trucks are known for their box-like build. They carry a surplus of goods to their target customers.
Dump truck: This heavy vehicle is marked by its back part, which contains a deep bed. This is commonly used to transport construction materials like gravel, asphalt, or coal.
Transit bus: A staple in public transport, these carry people or goods from one point to another. They can be high-floor, low-floor, or double-decked.
Inner-city tour bus: Unlike the transit bus, which makes several stops throughout the city, this bus type is made for long-distance travel. It usually only makes one stop at a general location.
Tow truck: This special type of truck is designed to move damaged or impounded vehicles.
Boom truck: Known for its huge steel arm, this truck is used for short-term or temporary jobs that work with heights.
Enhance operational efficiency with heavy vehicle training
Once your drivers are on the road, anything can happen. This is why their safety should never be left as an afterthought. Investing in heavy vehicle training brings another layer of security to your business. It protects your drivers, their surrounding vehicles, and the goods for transport.
When your workers possess the special knowledge and skills for defensive driving, you can avoid unwanted production delays, keeping your customers pleased and satisfied.
