The construction industry is a major contributor to a country’s economic growth, but it also comes with significant risks. According to OSHA, falls remain the leading cause of death among construction workers.
When working at heights, you should skip out on your team’s safety harness training. Given the daily hazards your workers face, it’s crucial to provide them with the right knowledge and equipment to stay safe. With proper training, you can raise awareness and help your crew focus on their tasks without fear.
What is safety harness training?
Safety harness training is a specialized program that teaches your workers how to properly use, inspect, and maintain safety harnesses and related fall protection equipment. This training blends theoretical concepts with practical exercises to help your team understand the legal regulations, types of harnesses, and procedures for fitting the equipment.
The purpose of harness training is to prepare your workers for real-world scenarios where fall protection is critical. This is critical for construction, maintenance, and tasks performed at elevated positions.
What are the requirements for harness training?
OSHA standards require employers to enroll their crew in fall protection training if the role exposes them to fall hazards. This training aims to help workers recognize fall hazards and apply procedures to mitigate those risks.
According to OSHA standards, all safety harnesses used for fall protection should be fully working and compatible with the connectors used. As employers, your team needs to be evaluated by a competent person who’s skilled in the following areas:
Nature of fall hazards in the work site
Proper guidelines for maintaining and inspecting fall protection systems
Usage of guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, safety monitoring systems, and other protective equipment
Procedures for the storage and handling of equipment
The role of workers in drafting a fall protection plan
Refresher training is required whenever there are changes in the workplace and equipment, or when a worker’s knowledge or skills are found to be lacking.
Make fall protection your priority with safety harness training
In construction sites where scaling heights is the norm, your crew’s safety must be your top priority. With proper safety harness training, you can equip them with the skills to perform their jobs confidently while complying with OSHA’s requirements for fall protection.
