California has strict alcohol laws in place to protect communities from excessive alcohol consumption. Under Assembly Bill 1221, establishments selling and serving alcoholic beverages must comply with regulations to avoid administrative penalties and fines.
But more than legal compliance, proper alcohol server training is crucial to prevent underage drinking and over-serving customers who are already intoxicated. Through an RBS training program, you can maintain a positive reputation and encourage responsible drinking.
What is California alcohol server training?
California alcohol server training is mandatory for employees and managers involved in the sale and service of alcohol on-premises. The law defines an “alcohol server” as anyone who satisfies the following criteria:
Takes orders of a customer's alcoholic beverages for consumption
Verifies customers’ identity before allowing them entry to an on-premises ABC-licensed establishment
Pours alcohol drinks to customers
Delivers alcohol to customers
For your staff to earn their alcohol server certification, they must first complete an RBS training course. Generally, it covers the following topics:
Societal effects of alcohol
How alcohol impacts the human body
California laws and regulations related to alcoholic beverage control and driving under the influence
Intervention techniques to avoid serving and selling alcoholic beverages to underage groups or intoxicated customers
Creation of management policies promoting the prevention of serving and selling alcohol to minors or intoxicated patrons
Before taking training, on-premises alcohol servers and managers must register in the RBS Portal and pay the 3 USD exam fee. After completing their training from an authorized provider, they have 30 days to pass the ABC Alcohol Server Certification Exam.
Is alcohol server training mandatory in California?
According to state laws, alcohol server training is mandatory in California for bartenders, managers, and workers involved in the sale and service of alcohol on-premises. Given their legal duty to prevent the sale and service of alcohol to minors and intoxicated patrons, proper training is necessary to equip them for the task.
The online training typically lasts between 90 minutes and four hours. To take the ABC Alcohol Server Certification Exam, your staff must first complete training from an authorized RBS provider. Once they pass the exam, their certification is valid for three years. However, to maintain its validity, it must be renewed before its expiration date.
Without a valid alcohol server certification, your business could suffer from disciplinary action and administrative penalties. The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is authorized to revoke your liquor license for non-compliance with the law. Ultimately, it damages your business reputation and results in a loss of customer loyalty.
