While confined spaces (like manholes, tunnels, tanks, etc.) can be large enough for workers to enter, they are not designed for continuous occupancy due to the limited entry/exit points and presence of potential hazards. This list of confined space training programs is curated to help you improve the safety of your team.
Tight spots like tanks, manholes, and tunnels can be real danger zones if you don’t know what you’re doing. Oxygen shortages, toxic gases, and the possibility of getting stuck make them high-risk areas, making confined space training a crucial requirement for anyone working in these places.
What is confined space training?
Confined space training is all about giving workers the lowdown on how to identify hazards, assess risks, and enter these spaces safely. It covers the basics of using safety gear and what to do in case of an emergency.
Courses that tackle working in confined spaces act as a lifeline that helps workers stay safe and sound on the job. Plus, it's a way to stay on the right side of the law, complying with regulations that are in place to protect workers.
What are the requirements for confined space training?
When working in confined spaces, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires comprehensive training to keep everyone safe and sound. To make sure that these confined space awareness training are on par with industry standards, OSHA has given a set of requirements for organizations to follow:
Training scope: OSHA mandates that anyone who sets foot in or around confined spaces must go through a training course. This includes workers who enter these tight spots, attendants who keep an eye on things, entry and rescue team members, and supervisors who oversee it all.
Training content: The training must cover the basics of recognizing confined spaces, understanding the hazards that come with them, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and knowing what to do in an emergency.
Certification and documentation: Employers need to provide and document their team’s confined space certification, which includes the employee's name, trainer's signature, and date of completion. This serves as the seal of approval that your team is ready to handle the job.
Rescue training: Your team must also be trained on using safety and rescue equipment and emergency rescue procedures. This helps them prepare for the unexpected in case they need to pull someone out of a tight spot.
Retraining requirements: While OSHA doesn't specify exactly when you need to brush up on your skills, additional training is highly recommended if there are changes in job duties, if new hazards pop up, or if employees don't follow procedures to the letter.
