Manual handling puts your crew at risk of injuries and long-term bodily harm, especially if they use improper lifting, carrying, and stacking techniques. Help them stay safe and improve their productivity at work by using these 10 online manual handling training courses.
Manual handling is essential in manufacturing, as crews move and load heavy materials within factories, warehouses, and distribution centers. However, these tasks can put your teams at risk of injuries, strains, and disorders, which may prevent them from working, resulting in costly downtime and employee turnover.
One of the best ways to prevent this is by delivering manual handling training. It teaches crew members the right techniques and tools to safely and effectively handle bulky objects, heavy equipment, and large loads. This way, teams can stay active and engaged in their work, hitting more production targets and minimizing accidents.
What is manual handling training?
Manual handling training teaches teams the safest practices for heavy physical movement, including lifting, carrying, and stacking. It explains how crews can improve the load and transportation of objects by using equipment aids, good techniques, and control systems.
This safety training is valuable for any manufacturing site with lifters, stackers, and carriers, as it describes the best steps for safe, efficient, and compliant manual handling.
The training helps your crew avoid injuries by promoting safe mechanics, proper form, and effective assistance. It also increases risk awareness, helping teams avoid unsafe surfaces that can disrupt lifts and unnecessary movements that only prolong processes.
What does an online manual handling course usually cover?
Generally, online manual handling courses explore the following topics:
Risk assessment: Risk assessment is one of the most important topics a manual handling course can cover. It teaches teams how to identify, manage, and prevent health hazards during physical tasks.
Health and safety regulations: Reviewing relevant health and safety regulations helps your crew understand and apply the legal standards for manual handling. In the United Kingdom, for example, these requirements are outlined in the Manual Handling Operations Regulations of 1992.
Safe manual handling techniques: Safe manual handling techniques teach teams good body mechanics and posture, allowing them to use proper form when lifting and carrying.
Emergency procedures: Emergency procedure training prepares teams to respond to accidents and injuries related to manual handling. It explains how to treat sprains, strains, fractures, and cuts just to name a few.
Mechanical lifting aids: This training topic helps crew members maximize the efficiency and safety of mechanical lifting aids. Equipment like dollies, lifting magnets, and turntables allow them to ease or avoid intense physical handling.
Control systems: In this topic, production floor teams improve their understanding and practice of an organization’s control system for manual handling. These systems include standard procedures and quality controls that maintain safety and efficiency.
Ergonomics: Ergonomic training helps shop teams rearrange and organize their workstations to avoid repetitive movements that cause strains. It allows them to minimize seating, adjusting, bending, and reaching by fixing station layouts.
Different certifications: Certification training evaluates each team member’s knowledge and skill to make sure they can perform manual handling safely and effectively. Courses like HSE certificates prove qualification and expertise for the role.
