Retail teams can learn the best way to decommission equipment with this Mitti (by SafetyCulture) course. They will be familiarized with the key phases of the decommissioning process. Additionally, they’ll be introduced to the different types of decommissioning processes available in retail and taught to identify early signs of irreparability.
The course also includes dedicated lessons focused on safety and compliance. It covers topics like spill and exposure response, as well as disconnecting and de-energizing equipment for decommissioning safety. They’ll also learn about various decommissioning documentation best practices.
Mitti (by SafetyCulture) courses like this come with gamification features designed to encourage your team to complete their training faster. Interactive elements and leaderboards keep them more engaged in their training, leading to higher retention rates as well.
The International Association of Information Technology (IT) Managers offers a disposal management course heavily focused on the disposal of IT assets. It tackles electronic waste regulations that may be relevant in the disposal of point-of-sale (POS) systems and other retail equipment containing electronic components.
Injuries during retail equipment disposal can be caused by the improper handling of workers and operators. CPL Learning discusses proper lifting techniques and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage to prevent accidents when handling decommissioned equipment.
Retail equipment like refrigeration units, cash registers, and POS systems that are connected to internal power sources need to be properly disconnected before removal. Doing so prevents the unexpected release of hazardous energy and protects your team from the risk of electrocution, burns, fractures, and other forms of injury.
This course can teach your team how to perform lockout and tagout procedures to keep others from accidentally starting up equipment during decommissioning. It covers key steps, along with the lockout devices available to your team. It also familiarizes them with the common tags they’d find on locked equipment.
Comprehension of these LOTO procedures is crucial in keeping your team protected from hazardous energy as they remove or dispose of equipment. Thankfully, Mitti (by SafetyCulture)’s built-in reporting tools can give you access to your team’s retail training performance and get valuable insights on who might need additional support.
In this course, Cloud Assess covers PPE usage in detail, discussing what problems and risks people typically experience and teaching them how to handle PPE mishaps. They’ll learn how to maintain, inspect, and use PPE to maximize protection. Plus, they will discover the legal requirements and standards around PPE usage.
For larger and heavier pieces of equipment, decommissioning requires your team to learn how to safely dismantle its parts to prepare it for removal. To do this, many companies have resorted to machine guarding to avoid contact or keep dangerous parts in place.
From hazardous motions to non-mechanical hazards, this Mitti (by SafetyCulture) course tackles different machine hazard examples that can harm your decommissioning team. It lists several machine guarding methods and their role in maintaining workplace safety, showing your team how they can protect themselves as they dismantle equipment.
Mitti (by SafetyCulture)’s machine guarding course is delivered through a microlearning format. As such, it breaks down core concepts into short, easily digestible modules built for better comprehension. This also allows your team to accomplish their training milestones faster so they can be well-equipped on their first day.
This course teaches your team various hazard evaluation techniques and control methods like elimination, substitution, and administrative and engineering controls. It helps them recognize the risks of handling items during equipment decommissioning and trains them to respond effectively.
Retail establishments contain equipment such as refrigerants, cleaning agents, lighting fixtures, and electronic devices that can contain hazardous substances. This course teaches employees how to identify, store, and label hazardous waste from equipment for a safe decommissioning procedure.
The Knowledge Academy’s risk assessment training covers key principles that can help your team spot the dangers of handling certain types of equipment during disposal. Its focus on machinery makes it suitable for larger equipment like refrigeration units. Plus, it also covers risk control to show your team how they can act on these risks.
Course 10
Workers who decommission equipment frequently carry heavy equipment for proper isolation and disposal. This material handling course from Traliant teaches proper lifting techniques to prevent strain, back pain, and other injuries. It also has lessons on hazardous waste management for dangerous substances in equipment.

View author profileEquipment decommissioning in retail establishments requires various skills and knowledge, from risk assessment to proper handling techniques. We’ve listed 10 retail equipment decommissioning training courses to help your team dispose of obsolete equipment safely and smoothly.
Retail equipment decommissioning training teaches employees the proper procedure of shutting down, removing, and disposing of old retail equipment. Taking out old equipment prevents it from causing harm to your team and makes space for newer, well-maintained equipment or other uses.
While retail teams have the collective responsibility to keep store operations running smoothly, separate roles make sure that all store needs are accounted for. Despite varying roles, retail equipment decommissioning training can benefit members of your retail team in different ways:
Facilities or maintenance managers: Oversee the safe shutdown and removal of equipment according to safety and environmental regulations.
Technicians and maintenance staff: Primarily responsible for equipment decommissioning, they’ll need training to safely dismantle and dispose of retail equipment as part of their daily responsibilities.
Health and safety officers: Maintain team safety by making sure that safety regulations are properly followed when decommissioning equipment to minimize accidents and injuries.
Environmental compliance specialists: Check for hazardous materials in retail equipment and facilitate proper disposal methods for the team’s safety.
Asset management and disposal staff: Handle documentation and logistics of decommissioned equipment, including audits and vendor coordination.
Retail equipment decommissioning training covers several topics on everything your team needs to know to practice safe equipment removal. We’ve listed some key considerations that training covers to make sure your team can stay safe as they decommission retail equipment on the job.
Power isolation through Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Making sure all power sources are completely disconnected and locked out to prevent reactivation during the decommissioning process.
Hazardous material management: Things like identification, labeling, safe handling, and disposal of hazardous substances found in retail equipment to prevent environmental contamination and worker exposure.
Site preparation and securement: From obtaining permits to using protective barriers, this is mostly concerned with preparing the site for decommissioning to control movement and prevent injury.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage: An added precautionary measure is protecting retail employees involved in equipment removal by teaching them the proper use of protective equipment.
Risk assessment and planning: Conducting a detailed inspection of the site for equipment-specific hazards and creating a safety plan that best addresses these hazards.
Part of the reason why teams need retail equipment decommissioning training is so that they can comply with relevant regulations and standards when removing equipment. Below are some examples of the regulations and standards that decommissioning training can address:
OSHA Lockout/Tagout Standard (29 CFR 1910.147): Requires the implementation of lockout and tagout procedures during maintenance or decommissioning to prevent the release of hazardous energy.
OSHA Personal Protective Equipment Standard (29 CFR 1910.132): Involves sufficient provision and proper use of protective equipment to prevent worker injury during equipment removal.
OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200): Makes sure your team is aware of the hazards associated with the retail equipment to be removed so they can protect themselves from it.
OSHA General Duty Clause Section 5(a)(1): Requires employers to maintain a hazard-free workplace for their employees’ safety, which is accomplished through safe decommissioning procedures taught in training.
